“Seven heads popped out of the sea”
March 5th, 2026
The bright orange fluorescent chip shop next to The George Tavern was a guiding light through the mist. There is something about looking directly at the venue at the double crosswalk that makes it difficult to wait for the green signal. Even as temperatures ease there is the same restlessness to be indoors for the soundcheck. I have been wanting to see Egyptian Blue live for a long time, but was excited to hear big long sun on first.
I can only count on one hand how many times I have heard a band pull off a cowbell. Tonight, I was blessed with such an experience. big long sun is chaos conducted through typically eight, but tonight, a seven-piece. Their set was one of the most challenging to film, as each element of each song was completely unique. Even their merch refuses to be uniform, as it is made from upcycled thrifted t-shirts they have screen printed. When I met up with the band after their set, I asked how everyone met. Jamie (vocals/guitar) said he was “swimming in Brighton and seven heads popped out of the sea” and asked “would you like to be in a band with me?’”. You can find them playing at MOTH Club Thursday the 12th. In the meantime, check them out on Spotify.
Never have I ever seen the George Tavern as packed as it was for Egyptian Blue ’s set. They play with a great sense of urgency and the entire crowd can feel it. Egyptian Blue opened a pit as big as the tight venue could accommodate. After the set, Andy (vocals/guitar) joined me in the garden to answer a couple of questions. He told me much of their songs come from obsessively listening to recorded practice sessions for something that stands out to be developed into a song. During live performances, songs can also be altered to suit the crowd. Andy said that “you can see a lot in peoples’ eyes. Its a special thing to share a moment with someone who the song might mean something to” Follow along on Instagram to come see Egyptian Blue as new shows are announced.
Although the bill was shorter than typically at the George Tavern, big long sun and Egyptian Blue were everything someone could ask for on a Wednesday night and more. I’m planning on returning on May 8th to see big long sun again.
