“Antics and Theatrical Gags”

Springtime has finally arrived, and I saw the garden of The George Tavern in daylight for the first time. I love arriving to a venue early, when only the bands have arrived. It amuses me to see everyone in their natural state versus when they take the stage, blinded by strobes and covered in colored lights. Taste of Cherry, Domestic Partners, and Wheel2! took the spotlight. Once my friends appeared, there was no time to share news as the guitars first started blaring through the side door.
Beginning from the floor of the pit, Taste of Cherry’s frontman crawls up to the stage. Theatrical is one of the best words to describe Taste of Cherry from walking through the audience all the way to the bar with a death drop before returning to the stage. The frontman ends their set by falling from the stage and leaving through the front door of the George Tavern. In the garden, Taste of Cherry confirmed their appearance of being friends having fun. Performing is their favourite part, and they plan to continue getting more theatrical. They revealed some of the gags planned for the upcoming DIY festival they are playing, but I would hate to spoil the surprise. You can listen to their new EP on Spotify here or check out one of their music videos.
Wheel2! is a completely visceral experience. Vocals were deeply emotional, almost as if sobs were made intelligible. This stripped-back set consisted of one guitar, both clean and violently distorted, and a piano. There were 2 microphones to add to this dichotomy, one with a haunting echo effect. Halfway through the set, a guest was summoned to the stage with white eyelashes that reflected the lights and a beautiful voice that complemented the raw performance.
The three-piece that followed conducted chaos. Keys were played with great skill and also smashed with elbows like a child throwing a fit. Another member of the band played synth, sax, and violin, creating a set that was carefully unpredictable. The drums kept the pulse of the song, whether there was an outbreak or a breath to be taken. Domestic Partners eventually began to move the crowd as we became acclimated with the intense energy they brought to the room. You can find their new single Turbine Failure Blues here.
The fry place across the street is the next destination following the performances. While debriefing everything that has happened in our lives throughout the past five days, we watch members of the bands we just saw come in and out with their own treats. Luckily, the journey home involved a line closure that only resulted in one additional connection.
