War Machine

Last night us rodents subway surfed atop the J train as it shuttled across the Williamsburg bridge, our tails whipping around in one of the first pleasant spring breezes of the season. We were on our way to Bushwick’s The Broadway for a night of noise from Daysies, Whisper Doll, War Machine, and Wince. Here’s what hit our ears:

Daysies’s guitarist did that thing where they perpetually hold the whammy bar while playing, which is difficult to do. We’ve tried it ourselves but our paws and claws are much too tiny. The music was great, but what really stuck out was their incredibly artful noise jams they would play in between songs, seamlessly blending the whole set together with a trippy transitional glue. They conjured tons of harmonic volume for just a trio, we bobbed to the galloping energy of this awesome whammy-core.

Whisper Doll was bliss-gaze. Their frontwoman freely ad-libbed sweet melodies in a register that floated above the instrumentation. Except for lead guitar, which picked melodies of their own that swung around high like a kite together with the vocals. We dug their bassists five string and they also had cool merch that they were slinging out of a suitcase. Check out their album Perfume Garden available on CD here.

War Machine was not dark, but deep. Their songs were a twist on Nirvana’s quiet/loud/quiet formula, the method to their madness being calm/frenzied/calm. Rhythm dominated these tunes, their drummer was lightning fast with an endless well of flutters and machine gun fills. They covered a huge spectrum of energies for a single set, from sweet melodic to manic dissonance. War Machine had us swaying, dancing, thrashing, and convulsing.

Imagine if Interpol had long dark hair, liked math rock, noise rock, intricate syncopation, and was nothing like Interpol at all. That was Wince. And wince we did, because some dipshit in the front row was blowing clouds of vape smoke directly on stage into the face of the vocalist as they sang. Dude, are you dumb??? As soon as we thought this they got called out over the PA for being directly under the smoke detector. Then the smoke alarm went off, then a mosh pit broke out, and Wince’s star shined brightest as facilitators of chaos.

We don’t go to The Broadway much but every time we do we remember how much we love the place. A high ceiling projector was playing Total Recall on a wall in the back above a lone pool table. A broken CD jukebox with titles like Iggy Pop’s Lust For Life and Flippers Blown’N Chunks sat idle, collecting dust. A jukebox was hardly needed though, not with the rocking sounds of Daysies, Whisper Doll, War Machine, and Wince so readily available. Give them a listen and we’ll see you around, Rrrat Pack.
