Another evening at Nighclub 101? Indeed. Truth be told, it’s easier to get to than most of the Brooklyn clubs. And we’ve been interested in the lineups they’ve been putting together. Last night spun out of control for us but before it did we watched Fake Pollocks, 95 Bulls, and Pons turn on the Friday night lights. Here’s our memory:

We’d been listening to Fake Pollocks’s The White Eichler all day and couldn’t believe it was the song we walked in on them playing. We were transfixed, everyone was as rhythmically locked in as possible. Songs were precise and exacting. They syncopated, re-syncopated, de-syncopated. All three guitarists were vocalists, each with their own distinct affect. One spoke as if ranting an inner monologue out loud, another shouted in ways you’d expect on hardcore/emo. It was the musical equivalent of a $50,000 Looney Tunes branded watch.

95 Bulls chugged and fuzzed. Their vocalist drank Red Bull on stage, sugar free. And they spilled it. They could really scream and hold a note, reminded us of a punk-rock Heart. If you added this quintet up together with their name, they’d be 100 bulls. They had one single vinyl left for sale but plenty of CD’s. “vinyl of the car”, they said, which made us laugh. They had synth, they had ryffs, they were the shyt.

Pons spared no theatrics, their lead starting the set sitting in a giant hand shaped armchair at the front of the stage, arms outstretched. Lights were dark red and dim as they let loose an assault on the dance floor. It was like electro-clashes’ deranged cousin who’s definitely been institutionalized. Paging Dr. House, there’s a dance party in the psych ward. They played a bunch of new songs that they had recorded in the last 25 days and was unloading them on the first gig of their North American tour, running through mid-September.

We’re glad we took notes during the gig because the night led us down to several dungeonous caverns, sweaty dance floors, and toxic rodenticides. Our whiskers ache with the weight of several bad decisions. Anything to escape the Rrrat Rrrace. Nothing good happens after 2:00AM, which is why Fake Pollocks, 95 Bulls, and Pons put a wrap on their spectacular performance by 11:00. Did you skip the gig? Go to the next one. Rrrock On, Rrrat Pack, see you around.
