Show Review: Heavy Wild, Warphole, Lone at Berlin Under A, NYC.

Last night the D train took us down to the Lower East Side’s Berlin Under A. We caught word that London's Heavy Wild had crossed the Atlantic to put on a series of shows stateside. Supported by NYC’s very own Warphole and South Jersey’s Lone, it was a rocking night of riffs. Here’s what we recall:
Lone broke out the gate with some covers and references. The intro to their second song was a slow alternative take on Tinashe’s Nasty and their third song was a tasteful cover of King Krule’s Out Getting Ribs. This Jersey quartet had plenty of their own material as well, a thrashing headbanger called Rest In Piss and an alt-rock crooner Coup de Grace just to name a couple. Their range was wide, and they also confirmed what we had been suspecting for some time, that Ed Hardy is back in fashion.
Warphole was warp-speed indie punk. Like a faster and more gravelly Front Bottoms, they raced through their set like a runaway 6 train. Their frantic yet carefree flavored chords combined with their singer's gritty screams and shouts evoked a kind of not-so-long-ago nostalgia. Our favorite song of the bunch was their latest single dropped just last month, Ocean Eyes.
Heavy Wild brought a stadium-sized anthemic sound to Berlin’s pocket-sized stage. With bright synth pads and incessant floor tom pounding, they built a noisy dreamscape for their songs to live in. With Springstein-like aspiration, they sang impassioned tales of heartache. They’ll be playing again tonight at Brooklyn’s Alphaville, on a bigger stage, if you want to feel it for yourself.
It’s fleet week in New York City, sailors and seamen were abound among last night's crowds. It was an early show so the sounds of Lone, Warphole, and Heavy Wild bounced around our head as we dove further into the night.
