“What a week, huh?”. “Captain, it’s Wednesday”. On this mid-April Wednesday we made our way down to Brooklyn’s Trans Pecos because we heard some rocking bands were set to play under TP’s comically oversaturated red, green, and blue lighting. Holiem hopped on the bill at the last minute to join Nat Shaheen, Crate, and Ringing. Here’s what we recall:
Holiem recently released a new single Space Mad and accompanying music video you can watch at your leisure here. They started off the night of music with this rocking track, after a low key noise jam that included a lick from Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory’s Pure Imagination. Their drummer held his left stick backwards, try it sometime. In fact, it’s worth trying for yourself many of the things this superpower trio does on stage. They are space mad scientists that have cracked the code of how to write out-of-this-world songs.
This sounds like a riddle. If there are 22 guitar strings on stage, how many guitars are there... ? The answer is three, plus one bass. That was Nat Shaheen. That being said, a cinder block in front of the kick drum kept it from drifting away, and for good cause because the kick was mixed pretty loud. Which was perfect. Never change, Trans Pecos. Their guitarist that was drinking what we were drinking played the Spongebob riff in between songs. Anyway, they were loud, bright, and dreamy, with flairs of psych. Perfect sounds for a spring evening.
The heavy midtempo of Crate tasted like the 90’s. At one point both guitarists were dual wielding their whammy bars, a cool visual spectacle. They said their own name after every song, “Crate”. This happened so many times that the crowd started repeating it back to them. We got handed a fortune cookie in the middle of the set. It said “New beginnings are coming your way”. When the next song ended we called out “Crate” for the first time. They recently released a single Necklace that we’ve included here. CRATE.
Ringing was playing their first show since February, and started it off with six new songs. We once heard a band describe themselves as “heavy gaze” and this fit right in with the vibe. Thick smoke from the fog machine filled the room, the space became a haze of gaze. Their songs pulsed like the heart monitor of an emergency room. Be on the lookout for these six new tracks, it sounds like a new Ringing album may be in the works. We left with our ears ringing, that’s for sure.
And that’s all we wrote. If you missed the show make sure to connect with Holiem, Nat Shaheen, Crate, and Ringing to make it to their next gig. With spring and summer around the corner, what better to do than fill your head with new tunes. Rock on, Rrrat Pack, see you around.
