The Dare

Fucking Monday, and we were unwell to boot. Must have snacked on some rodenticide masquerading as street trash. Damn rat traps. We were saying our own last rites but also had an invitation from a friend to get down to The Dare & Frost Children at Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right. So we rallied. When duty calls, we answer the call of duty. By the end of the night we were sweaty, exhausted, and miraculously free from the pain that had been plaguing us. “thank you”. Here’s our account of the show:

The door from the green room to the stage must have turned into a time machine because when Frost Children stumbled out, they were coming straight from a 2007 American Apparel flickr gallery. This group would have lived on top the highest peaks of the MySpace music pages. The internet calls them glitchcore/synth pop/electro punk, but we just called it crazy. Cyber Slench is our chosen genre term. Recession indicators were blaring to the sound of a hardstyle remix of Rihanna’s We Found Love, along with 100 other absurd genre mashups smashed into a 30 minute set. We danced nonstop.

Legend goes that The Dare first played Girls at Baby’s All Right. True or not, last night he closed with it. But in between, hundreds of hands flew through the air as we bounced through his 2024 debut album What’s Wrong With New York? as well as some new and unreleased songs. Early on in the set, after picking up an eight foot tall cymbal, holding it out like a sword over the crowd, and smashing on it with a drumstick, he cut his hand and went on intermission. A few minutes later and bandaged up he returned to restart the party. So when Movement came on it was all too fitting. “Oh, and the fear is in my blood. And the blood is in my head”. We sang along but changed the end to “And the blood is on THE FLOOR”.

We dare you to predict what comes next. Usually it’s a mystery, but The Dare is playing Baby’s every night through Sunday. Tickets are mostly sold out so you’ll have to get creative if you want to go, but it’s worth the show. Rrrock On, Rrrat Pack, see you later.
